Growing up as a female in the U.S., you learn very quickly that you better look good if you want people to like you. And you better look good like other people think "good" is and not just "good" like you think it is. At least that's what the media says.
And whether you're male or female, you had better be successful too, like other people define success. Because if you're not "successful"... you're a failure. Right?
It's lies like this that I have lived under for most of my life and I'd venture to guess that you have too. Even as a Christian, I never really questioned these fundamental assumptions. But the problem is, that if you don't seem to be beautiful or successful, then where does that leave you?
So, a little while ago God in all His mercy began to take the pretty packaging off of some of these lies I was eating like candy and let me see them for what they were. At that point, I had to ask Him, "Well, I know who the world says I am, but who do You say that I am?" and so I began this project.
I literally went through the Bible (all of the New Testament and parts of the Old) looking for what He said about me as a Christian woman. (Most of these also apply to men.) I then rephrased them so they became statements that I could speak about myself.
This is important because like the Bible says, "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (Jn 8:32) And who doesn't want to be set free? But also, because words are very powerful. We've seen their power over all these years as we've dragged around our broken-down self-images. But we also see their beautiful power when God does things like make light by saying "Let there be light." (Gen 1:3)
I hope and pray that this project is a helpful tool for you and that you begin to believe the truth about who you truly are and who you were made to be. Let there be light in your spirit.

|
Gal 3:26-29
|
ÉGod sent His Son,
born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might
receive the full rights of children. Because I am a daughter, God sent the

made me also an heir.

He chose me in him
before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In

redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the
riches of GodÕs grace that He lavished on us with all wisdom and
understanding.

|
Heb 12:5-6, 11

for me to be sanctified; that I should avoid sexual immorality; that I should
learn to control my body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in
passionate lust like the heathenÉ God did not call me to be impure, but to
live a holy life.
|
1 Thes 4:3-4,7
|
I am a daughter of
the light and a daughter of the day. I do not belong to the night or to the

|
2 Cor 5:17
|
I am justified by
faith in Jesus Christ and not by observing the lawÉ I have been crucified

for me.

I was dead in my
transgressions and sins, but God made me alive with Christ—it is by

I have taken off my
old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being
renewed in knowledge in the image of its creator. Here there is no Greek or
Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but
Christ is all, and is in all. I am part of GodÕs chosen people, holy and
dearly loved.
|
Col 3:9-12
|
I have been given
fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. In Him I
was circumcised in the putting off of the sinful natureÉ having been buried
with Christ in baptism and raised with Him through my faith in the power of
GodÉ When I was dead in my sins and in the uncircumcision of my sinful
nature, God made me alive with Christ.
|
Col 2:10-13

In GodÕs great

is the Spirit.
|
2 Cor 3:17-18*
|
JerusalemÉ is free,
and she is our mother. I am a child of promise like Isaac. I am not a child
of the slave woman, but of the free woman. It is for freedom that Christ has
set me free. I will stand firm and not let myself be burdened again by a yoke
of slavery. I am called to be free.

lilies of the field.
|
Matt 6:25-34*

I am JesusÕ friend
if I do what He commands. He no longer calls me servant, because a servant

choose Him, but He chose me and appointed me to go and bear fruit—fruit
that will last.

Though I live in
the world, I do not wage war as the world does. The weapons I fight with are

itself up against the knowledge of God and I take captive every thought to
make it obedient to Christ.

Role as a Woman
|
|
I am to be praised
because I fear the Lord, rather than for charm or beauty which can be
deceptive and do not last.
|
Prov 31:30*
|
As a wife of
noble character, I am worth far more than rubies. My husband has full
confidence in me and he lacks nothing of value. I bring him good, not harm,
all the days of my life. I work hard, I take care of the needy, I take care
of my family and household. I am clothed with strength and dignity. I speak
with wisdom and give faithful instruction. My children and husband will praise
me.
|
Prov 31:10-31*
|
My body is not
meant for sexual immorality, but for the LordÉ My body is a member of Christ
HimselfÉ. I am one with the Lord in spirit because I unite myself with the
LordÉ My body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in me. I am not my own;

the Lord in both body and spirit.
|
1 Cor 7:34
|
A man is the image
and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. For man did not come
from woman, but woman from man; neither was man created for woman, but woman
for manÉ In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, nor is man
independent of woman. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of
woman. But everything comes from God.

When we were
called, not many of us were wise by human standards; not many were
influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things
of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to
shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised
things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that
are, so that no one may boast before him.

approved by God, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly

from ignoble purposes, I am an instrument for noble purposes, made holy,
useful to the master and prepared to do any good work.
|

life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be
first.

covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood

streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not
wither. Whatever I do prospers.
